Ryan Phillippe had to work really hard to get his role in The Lincoln Lawyer. So hard, that he says he actually had to audition for it!

Lionsgate is releasing the crime thriller The Lincoln Lawyer on Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD on July 12. The film tells the story of a lawyer Mick Haller (Matthew McConaughey) who works out of the back of his Lincoln town car while representing a high-profile client Louis Roulet (Ryan) in Beverly Hills.

Casting for the film was no easy task and Ryan really had to work hard to earn his role.

“Ryan Phillippe, he had to win this part,” producer Gary Lucchesi says in the clip. “There were a number of actors who were very interested in playing the role of Louis Roulet.”

“They were really specific in terms of casting this part and really needed to see it,” Ryan explains. “A lot of times at this stage in my career I don’t tend to read for things, but I really wanted the part. It was something unlike anything else I’ve ever played before.”

But once he got the part, rehearsing came to a halt.

“We first went to the rehearsals and I remember we had a few hours blocked out to go over some stuff and I said, ‘You know what. If it’s alright with you Ryan, I’d rather not rehearse because in this film we don’t know a thing about each other until we meet,’ ” Matthew recalls. ” ‘I want to be surprised by what you do and you be surprised by what I do. Let’s rehearse on film.’ ”

The Lincoln Lawyer also stars Marisa Tomei, Josh Lucas, William H. Macy and Bryan Cranston and will also be available for digital download and On Demand this July.

Ryan Phillippe has said that he likes to work hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle through diet and exercise.

The actor insisted that he will not always follow such an “extreme” fitness regimen, but would only ever “let [himself] go” if a creative project required it.

“Feeling strong and healthy is important to me in terms of my relationship with my kids and with myself,” he told The Advocate.

“Being active and relieving stress in the gym is a very important part of my mindset. I also find that it fights depression.”

Phillippe added that he is bothered by paparazzi who take photos of him while working out.

“One of the few situations where no-one wants to be photographed is when you’re working out, because you’re not at your most attractive when you’re all red, sweaty, and out of breath.

“That aspect of celebrity is very strange because I’m just a guy out trying to go for a run.”

CRASH star RYAN PHILLIPPE credits Hollywood legend PAUL NEWMAN with giving him the impetus to become an actor.
The 33-year-old was undecided about his career path until he watched Newman in 1967 film Cool Hand Luke.
He says, “I didn’t want a small life. I wanted to experience something different. I aspired to that even without knowing how to achieve it.
“I remember being fascinated and inspired by his (Newman’s) performance.”
